The waste hierarchy is a ranking
Reduce, reuse, recycle is ordered on purpose. Each step down the ladder costs more energy. Reuse sits above recycling because a reused object needs no remanufacturing — you simply use it again.
What recycling actually costs
Recycling an HDPE bottle means collecting, cleaning, shredding, melting and re-pelletizing it, then molding a new product. Every one of those steps burns energy and loses a little material. It is far better than landfill, but it is not free.
What reuse skips
A reconditioned tote reuses the steel cage and pallet — the two heaviest, most carbon-intensive parts — with zero remanufacturing. Even when a bottle is replaced, the bulk of the container’s embodied carbon stays in service. That avoided smelting and molding is the whole savings.

Recycling’s proper place
None of this means recycling is bad — it is essential for tanks that truly cannot be reused. The point is sequence: reuse a tote as many times as it can safely serve, then recycle what is left. Recycling first wastes the reuse still in the tank.
Putting a number on it
As a rule of thumb, choosing a reconditioned tote over new keeps around 90 lbs of steel and plastic in service and avoids the emissions of building a virgin cage. Do that across a fleet and the tonnes add up quickly.
