Totes as off-grid infrastructure
Without a municipal connection, you become your own water utility — and totes are the cheapest bulk storage that fits the job. A cluster of tanks can capture, store, buffer and distribute water across a homestead with no electricity at all.
Rain capture
Route roof runoff through a first-flush diverter and a screen into a capture tote. A large roof fills tanks surprisingly fast in a storm. Link several totes at the base so they fill and draw as one larger reservoir.
Greywater — kept separate
Greywater from sinks and showers can irrigate non-edible plants after light filtering, but it must never mix with potable supply or pool long enough to turn septic. Buffer it in a clearly labeled, dedicated tote and move it to the landscape quickly.

Gravity supply
Elevate a supply tote on a rated stand and gravity does the pumping. Three to four feet of height gives enough pressure for taps, drip lines and washdown. It is reliable precisely because there is nothing to fail — no pump, no power.
Keep potable water safe
Any tote in the drinking-water path must be food-grade, shaded against algae, and maintained. Separate potable and non-potable systems completely, and the whole off-grid setup runs clean for years on reconditioned tanks.
