Stack IBC totes no more than two high when full (three empty), always squarely cage-on-cage, on level ground rated for the load. Never stack incompatible chemicals above one another, keep aisles clear for forklift access, and inspect lower tiers for cage deformation.

Know your stack limit
A full 275-gallon tote weighs around 2,400 lbs. Manufacturers rate cages for a specific stack height — commonly two high when full. Empty totes can go higher. Exceeding the rating deforms the bottom cage and invites a collapse, so treat the limit as hard, not aspirational.
Square and level
Totes carry load through the corners of the cage. Stack them squarely, cage foot on cage top, never offset or overhanging. The ground matters too: an unlevel or soft surface concentrates load and can tip a stack. Concrete rated for the weight is ideal.
Chemical segregation
Never store incompatible chemicals stacked or adjacent where a leak from above could reach a reactive product below. Follow compatibility charts, keep acids and bases apart, and put anything hazardous over secondary containment.
Access and inspection
Good storage is inspectable storage:
- Leave forklift aisles wide enough to place and pull any unit
- Keep valves facing out and accessible for checks
- Inspect bottom-tier cages for bulging or corrosion
- Label every tote clearly with contents and date
Outdoor considerations
Outdoors, add UV protection for the bottle, watch for freeze risk, and make sure rain cannot pool on caps and seep in. A little site planning keeps stored totes safe and ready for years.
