Rural properties beyond municipal water service depend on on-site reserves for initial fire attack while the fire department responds. A cluster of IBC totes elevated on a stand can feed a gravity-supplied hose line at 1–3 gallons per minute — enough to hold a small structure fire or a grass fire until a tanker arrives.

A typical rural fire suppression setup uses two to four totes linked at the base valve through a manifold so they fill and draw as one reservoir. At 275 gallons per tote, four tanks provide 1,100 gallons — a meaningful reserve for an initial attack line running at 2 GPM for nearly ten hours.

Gravity-fed lines: the pressure math

Every foot of elevation above the outlet adds approximately 0.43 psi of static pressure. A tote elevated four feet on a stand produces roughly 1.7 psi — sufficient for a drip or trickle line, but not enough for a conventional fire hose. Raising to eight to ten feet gets you to about 4 psi, which supports a low-flow garden-style hose at reasonable volume.

For higher pressure, a small 12V pump (often used for RV or agricultural spray applications) can boost output to 30–60 psi from the tote reservoir, giving a real suppression stream without utility power. Size the pump to your hose ID and required flow rate.

Emergency storage for power outages

When grid power fails, well pumps stop. A food-grade tote pre-filled from the well and sealed provides household water for days to weeks depending on family size. At one gallon per person per day for drinking and minimal sanitation, a 275-gallon tote covers a family of four for nearly two months.

Site the emergency tote at a slight elevation so a gravity valve provides access without electricity. Keep a food-grade hose and clean containers staged with the tank. For longer outages, a 12V battery-powered transfer pump lets you pressurize a line from a solar-charged battery bank.

Volume math: gallons per minute

Size your reserve by working backward from demand. A typical garden hose delivers 5–9 GPM; a 1-inch fire hose at low pressure runs 25–40 GPM; a standard residential shower uses about 2 GPM. Decide how many minutes of supply you need, multiply by GPM, and that is your minimum tote volume.

For a 30-minute initial attack at 10 GPM, you need 300 gallons — roughly one and a half 275-gallon totes. That math is the starting point for sizing a farm reserve. Add margin for what you will use in normal farm or household operations so reserves stay full.

Keeping stored water potable long-term

Stored water can grow bacteria and algae if left untreated in the light. For potable reserves, use a food-grade tote, completely shade the translucent bottle from sunlight, and treat the water lightly before sealing. The CDC and FEMA recommend approximately 8 drops of unscented 6% sodium hypochlorite bleach per gallon for treating stored water, or follow current public health guidance.

Rotate the supply at least annually — drain, clean the tote interior, and refill with fresh water. Mark the fill date on the tote with a weatherproof label.
