A two-tote aquaponics system uses one tote as a fish tank and the top of the second, cut open, as a media grow bed. Water pumps up to the grow bed, plants filter it, and it drains back to the fish. Use only verified food-grade totes and cycle the system before adding fish.

The loop in one paragraph
Fish produce waste; bacteria convert it to nitrates; plants consume the nitrates and clean the water; the clean water returns to the fish. Aquaponics is just plumbing that closes that loop. Two totes give you a fish tank and a grow bed in one compact footprint.
Cutting the totes
Leave one tote whole as the fish tank. Cut the top off the second — or cut a tote in half — to form a shallow media bed. Because the cage supports the walls, the cut bottle keeps its shape when filled with gravel and water.
Grow media and flood-drain
Fill the grow bed with an inert media and add a simple flood-and-drain cycle:
- Expanded clay pebbles or washed gravel as root media
- A small submersible pump lifts water to the grow bed
- A bell siphon or timer drains it back to the fish tank
- Aim for several flood-drain cycles per hour
Cycle before fish
The most common beginner mistake is adding fish too soon. Run the system for several weeks to establish the nitrifying bacteria that make the loop work — test for ammonia and nitrite dropping to zero as nitrate appears. Only then add fish, and add them slowly.
Why food-grade totes only
You are growing food and raising live animals in this water, so the tank history matters enormously. Use verified food-grade or rebottled totes, never industrial ones. A reconditioned food-grade tote keeps the build cheap without risking your fish or your dinner.
Scaling up
Once one loop runs stable, the design tiles: add grow beds, add a sump tote, add more fish capacity. Many small commercial growers started with exactly two totes in a backyard.
